HM installs
another Möhringer Framesaw
Hans Merensky, the largest sawmilling group in Africa, processing
a total of 800,000m³ of sawlogs per anum, have installed a heavy duty 600 stroke
Möhringer Framesaw at their Northern Timber Mill.
Hans Merensky has a total of five different sawmills, Tweefontein in Sabie, Langeni,
Singisi & Weza in the Eastern Cape and Northern Timbers in Tzaneen. Northern Timbers
is a hardwood mill, processing exclusively Eucalyptus (gum) from HMH's own plantations.
Their intake is 90 000m³ per anum.
Northern Timbers lost their Linck Log framesaw on the 21st of May 2003, due to
breakage of the sash, and both cast iron A-frames, resulting in a total loss of
the machine.
After evaluating various other processing options, HMH came to the conclusion
that framesaws are still the most efficient option for their throughput and log
mix.
HMH brought the first Möhringer framesaw to Africa in 1995 for their Singisi mill.
They have experienced the Möhringer framesaw's advantages, reliability and it's
outstanding performance first hand over the years. It was exactly for these facts
& reasons that made them decide to replace the broken Linck with a brand new heavy
duty E-type Möhringer Framesaw. Wood Industry Supplies (WIS) Möhringer's local
agent was awarded the contract for the supply and commissioning of the new machine
on the 3rd of June 2003.
Möhringer Germany, had all the major components for this particular framesaw in
stock, such as the A-frames, sash and flywheel. This together with the help of
two framesaw technicians, who recently went on pension, and some overtime, enabled
them to assemble and complete the machine in a record time of only four weeks.
The complete Möhringer framesaw, together with all electrical switch gear panels
and hydraulic saw tensioner, left the Möhringer factory on the 4th of July 2003
for Amsterdam.
Normally machinery & equipment with these dimensions and weights are packed in
containers and are shipped via seafreight from Amsterdam or Hamburg. This machine
ended up at Amsterdam International Airport as HMH and their insurance company
decided to fly the equipment into South Africa, saving valuable production time.
The machine, with a total weight of 16,5 tons, was flown from Amsterdam to Johannesburg
with Martin Air's 747 freighter on the 8 July 2003.
To avoid any delay at customs in Johannesburg, the machine was pre-cleared by
WIS's airfreight agent Röhlig/Grinrod, and could be truck loaded on the 10th of
July 2003 for transport to Northern Timbers in Tzaneen. While Möhringer Germany
was busy with the manufacturing of the machine, Northern Timbers removed the old
machine and modified the Linck foundation to suit the new Möhringer framesaw.
As the Möhringer machine comes fully assembled with no separate base plate, the
modification was straightforward. The crown of the old foundation was removed,
eight new foundation bolt holes were drilled and the new crown, using approximately
1,5m³ of concrete was cast.
The Möhringer framesaw was lifted onto the foundation by a 140 tonne mobile crane
on Sunday 13 July 2003. The installation was done by Volker Bächle and Johan van
Reenen from WIS, using quick drying non-shrink cement "Duragrout 1000". This special
grout totally matures within 7 days, reaching a strength of 70 mpa. | | | | | | |
