Swartland refurbished it's wet mill with three new Möhringer framesaws, replacing 2 Kokums and one Linck Framesaw.
Production stopped on the 5th of December 2003 and the dismantling work could begin.
All three framesaws were cut loose from the bottom foundation block with a "Wire saw"
This "Wire saw", consisting out of a special diamond tipped chain, cut through concrete, reinforcing and foundation bolts. In only two days, all three framesaws were cut loose and lifted out through the roof of the wet mill building. Now the new foundation bolt holes were marked and drilled with a 130mm diamond core drill. Thereafter additional 50mm diameter holes were drilled for reinforcing rods to secure the new upper part to the old foundation. The foundations were modified, boxed & cast to suit the new Möhringer Framesaws.
On the 15th of December, all preparation work was completed and the 3 new machines were lifted onto their foundations by a 110 ton mobile crane. The riving knives were also lifted through the roof and got attached to each framesaw. The machines were then levelled out and aligned by Volker Bächle & Johan van Reenen of "Wood Industry Supplies". By the 21st of December 2003, all three framesaws were already cast in and ready for assembly.
The assembly work consisted out of fitting the main drive pulleys, mounting and connecting up hydraulic power stations, installing shaker chutes, mounting of water cooling system and lubrication pump. All electrical work was done by Swartland's own electricians, Johan Greyling and Herman Mulder. The framesaw's PCC and computer control was commissioned by Helmut Bedink, Möhringer's electronic engineer, who came out on the 8th of January 2004.
By Sunday 10th of January 2004, final assembly work was completed, all motors checked for direction and the hydraulic and lubrication system was tested. That same day the first log was processed on the Möhringer IS log frame and the cant on the IS deal frame in the presence of the owners, Hans & James Hanekom, without any problems.
Monday the 12th of January was mainly used for operator training. Hanging, aligning and tensioning of the framesaw blades with the Felde Hydraulic Tensioner and side pressure system. After lunch, production started on both lines where large diameters (above 30cm) were processed on the Möhringer IS-600 stroke machines (log & deal frames) and smaller diameter logs on the Möhringer I-550 stroke machine and one Kokums framesaw (both fly cutting)
The operators caught on very quickly with the new machinery and already processed 242m³ of logs on the Möhringer IS-600 stroke log & deal frame line during the night shift on 15 January 2004.
The Möhringer I-series (Intelligent) framesaws adjust the feed speed and overhang automatically for each log. The top & bottom infeed roller and the feed speed is automatically increased on the declining taper of the log. It is no longer up to the operator to choose the correct feed speed for each log, the Möhringer I-series framesaw does it all. This feature gives the operator more time to align the log or cant correctly and can increase throughput by 10% and more compared to an ordinary framesaw.
Swartland has also chosen Möhringer's top of the range riving knives, type SK733 for each framesaw. This heavy duty riving knife comes with hydraulic driven pull-out rollers and driven chain bed to feed all side boards securely onto the outfeed roller conveyor. The two knives are 2,4 meter long and almost reaches the back of the saw blade which ensures precise guiding of the logs.
The owners Jurie, James and Hans Hanekom, together with the mill manager Sean Gannon and Johan Decker (engineer) and his team, were pleased with the performance of the Möhringer equipment, workmanship of WIS and the timeous completion of the project.
Volker Bächle of Wood Industry Supplies would like to thank everybody involved to make this project a great success.
